The Enterprise The recent Olympic successes of Michael Phelps has put swimming back on the radar for local children and their parents. Other people are deciding to take it more seriously. Lifeguards and swim instructors in the area said they are noticing an increase in the number of people swimming and a more competitive spirit. "My (students) are much more into racing," said Tara Minnette, the head lifeguard at the Easton town pool. "And the parents are more into it, so it almost looks like the Olympics." On Monday, the outdoor pool at the YMCA in East Bridgewater was a popular spot for children. An 11-year-old named Nicole, of Bridgewater, was swimming in the deep end of the outdoor pool as she talked about the Olympics. "I wish I could swim like that," she said "It looks really hard, I don't know how they do it. Even people younger than Nicole are trying to learn. "A 9-year-old came in with his dad and his dad asked if he could swim laps," said Abby Weiss, a lifeguard and swim instructor at the YMCA. in East Bridgewater. According to Donald Martin, who is a swim instructor at the YMCA, more children are learning how to swim competitively. "Parents are teaching their kids how to swim competitively, how to do different strokes and the finer points of swimming laps," he said. Martin said he thinks it's great, not only because he likes to swim but because it's good exercise for anyone.
